The Dangers of Texting and Driving

The Dangers of Texting and Driving

Texting and driving should never be taken lightly. It is a very serious issue throughout the United States. This type of distracted driving is incredibly dangerous and can result in life-threatening injuries. There are currently 43 states that prohibit texting and driving. Every state must take texting and driving seriously as it is contributing to many catastrophic accidents. Texting and driving will affect you along with everyone else driving on the roads. It is not possible to be texting and fully focused on driving at the same time. Texting or reading a message takes your eyes off the road for at least 5 seconds. That is a long time to not be aware of what is around you while your car is moving. It is a very selfish act and no one should participate in texting while driving. Everyone is responsible for his or her own decisions when they are driving and are behind the wheel.

Why People Text and Drive

Accidents that involve texting and driving are completely preventable. The moment someone gets in their car to drive, they have a choice on whether they are going to set their phone down or use it while driving. Even if it is against the law, many individuals still do it daily. Typically they tell themselves, “It will be quick. I am just sending a short text or changing one song.” Everyone wants to believe that they can multitask but many studies have shown otherwise. You cannot be fully focused on the task of driving and be on your phone at the same time. You have the choice to not put yourself or others in harm’s way. All you have to do is refrain from using your phone when driving.

The Future Of Texting And Driving

Many states are tightening their laws on texting and driving and police are starting to patrol these actions a lot more. There is a strong passion to diminish this type of distracted driving. If you are caught texting and driving, many states will give you large penalties such as expensive fines. There are now features on cell phones that put the phone in driving mode and will lock it up so you cant use it when you are driving. In this mode, if you receive a text message, your phone will send out a generic message saying you are driving but you will get back to them when you can. This way individuals don’t feel so pressured to get back to individuals so quickly and they feel like they can finish driving before responding. Ultimately, there is no excuse to text while driving. Don’t do it, there is always another option.
