Mesa, AZ (November 9, 2020) – Officers with the Mesa Police Department are investigating after a man in a wheelchair was hit by a vehicle and killed in Mesa early Monday morning.

Mesa police and fire rescue units say that 58-year-old old Michael Workman was crossing the street at University Drive in his wheelchair, just before 6:30 a.m. At that point, the alleged driver of the car, 29-year-old Joseph Hunt, struck and killed Workman as he crossed. Local EMTs were dispatched shortly after the wreck occurred, but Workman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hunt stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities, but police say they believe Hunt was impaired.

The crash closed the area of University Drive and Dobson Road while police investigated. The investigation is ongoing.
