Mesa, AZ – Workplace Fire Results in Injury & Toxic Fumes Near Beeline Hwy
Mesa, AZ (October 28, 2019) – A fire that started on Friday at a recycling plant north of Mesa is still smoldering.
According to officials from the Mesa Police Department and Mesa Fire Rescue, the Salt River Landfill caught fire overnight Friday near the Beeline Highway and Gilbert Road and has now burned for more than 24 hours.
Crews at the scene say that the plant is full of plastic, which could release toxic fumes and potentially cause cancer as a result of the fire.
Dustin Zamboni, Fire Marshal for the Salt River Fire Department, said that crews are wearing respiratory protection while fighting the fire to prevent sickness. Fire crews don’t know what caused the fire and expected to be on scene through Sunday. Though no serious injuries were reported, officials say that a few workers were treated at a local hospital as a precaution.
Our thoughts are with any injured workers and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
Workplace Accidents in Arizona
When it comes to workplace accidents and injuries on the job site, victims are particularly vulnerable in the aftermath. From construction areas where workers often operate heavy machinery and equipment to chemical plants, these accidents resulted in nearly 37 deaths last year in Arizona.
After a workplace accident, victims and families are often left with financial difficulties, long-term physical issues, and emotional trauma. Plus, employers may attempt to cover up the incident or avoid paying a victim’s fair compensation after an accident on the job site, especially in cases where employers are at fault or were aware of the injury risks.
