Tempe, AZ – Details Released in Fatal Uber Accident on Mill Ave
Tempe, AZ (November 6, 2019) – Further details have been released after a self-driving Uber car hit and killed a woman last year in Tempe.
According to authorities, investigators found a major flaw in the software. They say that the Uber car could not detect pedestrians outside a crosswalk. Per a 400-page report issued this week by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Uber vehicle detected 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg about six seconds before hitting her while she attempted to cross Mill Avenue.
Governor Doug Ducey first welcomed Uber to use Arizona as a test lab for their new driverless technology in 2016, after the California Department of Motor Vehicles revoked the registrations from the self-driving Uber fleet.
Following the deadly accident, which occurred in March 2018, Ducey suspended Uber’s testing operations, and a spokesman from his office said they are still reviewing the report from the National Transportation Safety Board.
