Phoenix, AZ – Teenager Struck & Seriously Injured on Roeser Rd at Central Ave
Phoenix, AZ (January 2, 2020) – A car struck a 16-year-old boy after he pushed three younger girls to safety in a Phoenix crosswalk on Wednesday night.
According to officers from the Phoenix Police Department, the group was walking in the crosswalk shortly before 8:20 p.m., traveling eastbound on Roeser Road at Central Avenue in downtown Phoenix. While they were crossing, a Dodge Challenger failed to stop and struck the teenage boy, said Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
The 16-year-old boy saw the approaching Challenger and pushed the three other children out of the way. He was able to save three girls, ages 4, 11 and 12, from injury. Though one of the girls was still struck, she was not injured.
The 16-year-old boy was taken to a hospital via ambulance with serious injuries, Thompson said.
The Challenger’s driver, a 20-year-old man, told police he believed he had a green light when he entered the intersection, making a left turn and then driving through the crosswalk. He remained at the location following the collision, and impairment does not appear to be a factor, but the investigation is ongoing.
