Gilbert, AZ – Woman Hits & Injures Gas Station Clerk at Higley Rd & Chandler Heights

Gilbert, AZ (December 30, 2019) – A woman is accused of hitting and injuring a gas station clerk and assaulting a police officer at a Gilbert gas station.

According to officers from the Gilbert Police Department, Jovanna Cruz Alvarez, 32, faces three counts of felony aggravated assault and one count of unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle. The accident happened on the afternoon of December 22nd at the Chevron at the corner of Higley Road and Chandler Heights Road. Per the police report, Alvarez was parked outside the gas station, waiting for a friend who was inside the store and attempting to shoplift a case of Budweiser.

When the friend came out of the Chevron with the beer and got into the car, police say that a clerk ran out and tried to stop the suspects.

At that point, Alvarez accelerated toward the store employee. The employee was able to jump out of the way but sustained an ankle injury from the car and was in fear of his life.

Officers spotted the suspect’s car a short distance away, though police say she stopped the car, jumped out, and tried to run away when they attempted to apprehend her. She then resisted arrest and attempted to spray an officer with pepper spray.

Officers say that Alvarez’s preliminary breath test read .111, well above the legal limit to drive. Furthermore, a check showed Alvarez was driving on a revoked license and that she was wanted on multiple warrants.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family in hopes of a full recovery.
