Glendale, AZ (February 24, 2020) – Authorities responded to two separate drowning calls involving children on Monday afternoon.

Officials from Phoenix Fire said that a 1-year-old baby is in extremely critical condition after being found unresponsive in a backyard pool in Phoenix. According to Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Rob McDade, the fire department responded to a call around 3:30 p.m. on Monday to a home in the area of Southern Avenue and 40th Street. When firefighters arrived, family members were performing CPR in the front yard under the direction of 911 operators.

Crews initiated advanced life support treatment on the baby and he was then transported to Valleywise Health Medical Center, where he remains in extremely critical condition.

Around the same time, the Glendale Fire Department responded to a drowning call at a home in the area of 67th Avenue and Camelback Road in Glendale. A 1-year-old boy there made his way into a backyard pool through a door that was propped open. Department spokeswoman Ashley Losch said that the boy’s sister discovered him in the pool and started CPR. He was transported to the hospital, where crews were able to revive his pulse. Losch said his current condition has not been released.

Both accidents remain under investigation at this time.

Our thoughts are with the injured children and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
