Mesa, AZ – Paul Lanphear Injured by Exploding Ornament at Mesa Home

Mesa, AZ (December 1, 2019) – A Mesa man was putting up holiday decorations at his home when he said his child’s favorite ornament exploded, resulting in serious injuries to his face.

Paul Lanphear said he was changing the batteries of a Hallmark Christmas ornament on Sunday when it exploded in his face. The random battery explosion sent Lanphear to the emergency room. Local EMTs and rescue units arrived at his home to transport Lanphear to the hospital for his injuries.

Lanphear said that he was concerned that debris or acid from the battery got into his eyes and commented that the button batteries were provided by Hallmark, along with the ornament. Per police reports, Lanphear reached out to Hallmark about the exploding batteries and said the company took down a report on the incident. The incident remains under investigation, and Hallmark has not yet commented on the incident.
