Mesa, AZ – UPDATE: Deadly Crash Kills Two at Reckler Rd & University Dr

Mesa, AZ (August 2, 2019) – More details have been released after a deadly car accident on Mesa on Wednesday night, July 31st.

According to Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Heriberto Escerre-Vaal and his cousin, 23-year-old Eulayo Cesar Mendivil, were killed in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Recker Road and University Drive around 9:40 p.m. A Ford Explorer driven by 58-year-old Brenda Cleeves ran a red light while traveling southbound on Recker Road, hitting the victims’ passenger car, which was headed eastbound on University Drive.

Escerre-Vaal and Cesar Mendivil were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Cleeves’ condition is still unclear, but MCSO says they called in a Drug Recognition Expert to the scene and are awaiting test results to find out if Cleeves had drugs in her system at the time of the accident.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of Heriberto Escerre-Vaal and Eulayo Cesar Mendivil at this time.
