Phoenix, AZ – Fatality & Serious Injury Reported in 2-Car Crash at Thunderbird Rd

Phoenix, AZ (February 21, 2020) – One man is dead and another is in serious condition after a two-vehicle crash in Phoenix occurred on Friday afternoon.

Officers from the Phoenix Police Department say that the crash happened a little after 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, near Interstate 17. Police say a 51-year-old man driving a 2003 Ford Explorer was stopped and facing west on Thunderbird Road at the intersection of 35th Avenue, ready to make a left turn to travel southbound on 35th Avenue.

At that time, a 28-year-old man driving a 2004 Honda Odyssey with a passenger, identified as 24-year-old Derrick Coleman, reportedly traveled eastbound on Thunderbird Road and approached 35th Avenue. When the signal light for east and west traffic turned red, the Honda apparently went through the light very quickly and crashed with the Ford. The collision caused the Ford to spin counter-clockwise and the Honda to crash into a light pole, police say.

When Phoenix fire officials arrived at the scene of the crash, they transported Coleman and the driver of the Honda to an area hospital for serious injuries. Coleman later died at the hospital, and the driver remains hospitalized.

The driver of the Ford stayed on the scene and wasn’t seriously injured in the accident. The investigation remains ongoing.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Derrick Coleman. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of a full recovery.
