Phoenix, AZ – Jonathan Marroquin Killed in Crash at 35th Ave & Bell Rd
Phoenix, AZ (December 26, 2019) – A young man and a teen’s unborn baby have died after a multi-car crash late Thursday morning.
According to officers from the Phoenix Police Department, the crash happened around 11:15 a.m. in the area of 35th Avenue and Bell Road. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Jonathan Marroquin. Sgt. Maggie Cox of the Phoenix Police Department said that it started with a two-vehicle crash when one of the cars careened onto the sidewalk and struck several pedestrians.
Marroquin was transported to the hospital via ambulance but died at the hospital. A 15-year-old girl, who was 31 weeks pregnant, lost her baby and reportedly suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. An 18-year-old woman was also taken to the hospital, though she is expected to recover.
Investigators believe that the victims had just gotten off a bus. Cox said that other pedestrians were struck and injured but were not transported to the hospital. She also said neither one of the drivers, a man and a woman, was taken to the hospital. It’s not clear who was in which vehicle.
Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash and are piecing together the moments leading up to the crash.
Our condolences go out to the family of Jonathan Marroquin at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their families in hopes of a full recovery.
