Phoenix, AZ (January 18, 2021) – A woman has died after a wrong-way accident occurred on the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway near Cardinals Way in Glendale early Monday morning.

According to a report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the wrong-way driver entered the freeway at the Maryland HOV off-ramp and was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Loop 101 near Cardinals Way. The driver, identified only as a 24-year-old woman, and her 26-year-old passenger continued to drive southbound and collided with a vehicle that was traveling in the northbound HOV lane.

DPS says the female passenger in the vehicle was killed and the driver was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

DPS says there were no calls to 911 about a wrong-way driver before the accident.

Investigators believe the wrong-way driver may have been impaired, though the investigation continues at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.
