Phoenix, AZ – One Killed, Two Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on L-101 at Cardinals Way
Phoenix, AZ (January 18, 2021) – A woman has died after a wrong-way accident occurred on the Loop 101 Agua Fria Freeway near Cardinals Way in Glendale early Monday morning.
According to a report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the wrong-way driver entered the freeway at the Maryland HOV off-ramp and was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Loop 101 near Cardinals Way. The driver, identified only as a 24-year-old woman, and her 26-year-old passenger continued to drive southbound and collided with a vehicle that was traveling in the northbound HOV lane.
DPS says the female passenger in the vehicle was killed and the driver was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.
DPS says there were no calls to 911 about a wrong-way driver before the accident.
Investigators believe the wrong-way driver may have been impaired, though the investigation continues at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.
Wrong-Way Accidents in Arizona
Usually caused by impaired, distracted, or otherwise negligent drivers, wrong-way crashes mean severe consequences for those involved. In fact, wrong-way collisions, more than any other type of crash, occur when drivers are under the influence. Furthermore, studies show that nearly 90% of these wrong-way accidents are caused by some sort of driver negligence.
Plus, the interstates across Arizona are some of the most dangerous highways in the country, ranking in the top five across the nation for fatalities and injuries. For example, nearly 300,000 motorists travel on Phoenix’s highways on a daily basis, putting many drivers at risk for serious collisions on the major thoroughfare.
Tragic, unforeseen consequences may plague victims and their families after these wrong-way accidents. Due to the nature of these serious crashes, which are often head-on collisions, victims are much more vulnerable to serious injury or even death. But those affected can contact a Phoenix accident lawyer for help, and in some cases, seek the fair compensation they deserve from a personal injury suit or wrongful death suit.
