Phoenix, AZ – Two Killed & Three Injured in Fatal Car Crash at 32nd St & Cortez St

Phoenix, AZ (December 2, 2020) – Two people were killed and three others sustained serious injuries after a multi-vehicle crash occurred in north Phoenix on Tuesday night.

According to officers with the Phoenix Police Department, the crash happened at 32nd Street and Cortez Street, which is just south of Cactus Road. Firefighters said that a total of four cars were involved, and at least two people had to be pulled out of their vehicles.

Authorities say that the driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on 32nd Street and collided with a Nissan Maxima that was also traveling northbound. The impact of the crash caused the driver of the Maxima to lose control of the vehicle, colliding with a tree and a wall. The 25-year-old driver of the Maxima sustained serious injuries. His two passengers, identified as 24-year-old Kimberly Sorg and 49-year-old Michelle Kardys, were killed.

After hitting the Maxima, the driver of the Camry veered into southbound traffic, hitting a Chevy Cruz and another vehicle that left the scene. The driver of the Cruz, a 53-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries.

Police have not released the name of the 23-year-old man who was driving the Camry but first responders said that he suffered minor injuries. Sgt. Maggie Cox with the Phoenix Police Department said that he was evaluated and exhibited signs of impairment. Investigators also believe speed also was a factor in the crash.

Cox said that charges against the driver of the Toyota Camry are pending. No further details have been released at this time.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families of Kimberly Sorg and Michelle Kardys. Our thoughts are with the injured victims in hopes of a full recovery.

Fatal Car Accidents in Arizona

12.2 Phoenix, AZ - Two Killed & Three Injured in Fatal Car Crash at 32nd St & Cortez StOver the last several years, Arizona had one of the highest rates of multi-vehicle crashes in the nation, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association. In fact, Arizona had one of the highest fatality rates in the country as a result of multi-car crashes in 2016 alone, going on to record several hundred deaths by the end of the year.
