Phoenix, AZ – UPDATE: Details Released After Wrong-Way Crash on I-17
Phoenix, AZ (October 2, 2019) – Officials from the Arizona Department of Public Safety have released new details after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 17 Monday night that sent four people to the hospital.
Troopers were alerted to a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-17 near Jefferson Street just after 9:30 p.m. The wrong-way driver collided with three other vehicles only minutes later. According to a statement from Phoenix police officers, the driver was is a 40-year-old man who was driving a black Dodge sedan.
Two of the victims, a 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were traveling in a white GMC pickup at the time of the accident. The other two were identified as a 61-year-old Surprise man who was driving a white Dodge van and a 19-year-old man who was driving a silver Mercedes sedan.
DPS officials say that two of the victims suffered serious injuries and four total individuals were transported to a local hospital via ambulance. The wrong-way driver also suffered life-threatening injuries and may be hospitalized for an extended period of time, per information from authorities.
The crash remains under investigation at this time.
