Phoenix, AZ (January 1, 2021) – Officers with the Phoenix Police Department say that Interstate 17 southbound was closed for hours at Loop 303 after a deadly crash involving a pedestrian occurred early Friday morning.

Per reports from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident happened around 2:00 a.m. when a pedestrian was hit on the roadway of I-17 near Dixileta Drive. Local EMTs were dispatched to the area shortly after the incident occurred, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. That person has not been identified, according to DPS.

Southbound traffic was being diverted to  State Route 303 while police conducted the on-scene portion of their investigation, but the freeway has since reopened.

DPS is continuing to investigate and has not released further information at this time.
