Tempe, AZ – Deadly Overnight Crash Reported on L-202 Near Scottsdale Rd
Tempe, AZ (March 9, 2020) – A deadly crash forced a portion of Scottsdale Road near Loop 202 to close Monday morning in Tempe.
Tempe police Detective Greg Bacon said an initial investigation indicated a black car was heading northbound on Scottsdale Road when the driver struck a median. The black car became airborne and struck another vehicle before crashing into a pole.
The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to a hospital where they later died. Bacon said the deceased male driver was a student at Arizona State University.
The other driver was taken to a hospital via ambulance with minor injuries and was expected to survive. Police said both directions of Scottsdale Road were shut down for the investigation, and the closure cased mile-long back-ups on the 202.
The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the accident continues at this time.
We would like to extend our condolences to the family of the deceased victim. Our thoughts are with the injured victim. We hope for a full recovery.
