Tempe, AZ (January 3, 2021) – A man died early on Sunday after officers with the Tempe Police Department said his car crashed head-on with a light-rail train in the Tempe area.

Per reports from authorities, officials were dispatched to the scene just after midnight. The accident occurred near Center Parkway and Washington Street, said police spokesperson Detective Natalie Barela. Police said the car was traveling eastbound when it collided with the front of the westbound train for unknown reasons, according to Barela.

A man, the only person in the vehicle, died at the scene, Barela said. He has not been identified by police. The driver of the light-rail train was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, Barela said. No passengers were on the train at the time of the accident.

Police are working with the railway to review video taken in the area and are continuing to investigate the crash at this time.
