Top Causes of Car Accidents and How to Prevent Them

Car accidents occur daily on the roadways of Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Transportation reported a total of 127,056 car accidents occurred last year. These accidents can cause injuries that range from minor bruises to catastrophic injuries. It doesn’t matter if you are driving the speed limit or riding your bike alongside the road, anyone can be affected by the actions of another driver. It is important to understand the environment you are driving in as well as the common causes of accidents so you can protect yourself. Listed below are some of the most common car accidents in the United States.

Driving Impaired

Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication is incredibly dangerous. These types of accidents occur way too often. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that about 30 people die every day due to drunk driving accidents in the United States. When an individual drives while impaired, it not only affects them but everyone else surrounding them. If they cause an accident, they could severely injure everyone involved. It is important to call the police if you notice anyone swerving while driving.

Texting While driving

Texting while driving can be the cause of horrific car accidents. Many states have passed laws to make texting and driving illegal, but many individuals still continue to do it. The only real solution is for everyone to stay off their cell phones while driving and use them when they are parked. If it is something very urgent, pull off to the side of the road or into a parking lot to use your phone.

Speeding

Speeding while driving is very preventable. This is the second most common cause of accidents. Individuals need to be extra alert while driving to try and prevent an accident. If you are in a rush, take a second to think about what is important in life. Don’t put your life or the life on another individual in harm’s way.

Reckless Driving

Reckless driving is defined as tailgating, speeding, quickly changing lanes, and driving out of control. This type of driving can lead to serious accidents. An individual’s reaction time is lowered when they are reckless driving because often they are driving to fast for the conditions.

Weather Conditions

Poor weather conditions can cause accidents to occur because an individual’s view might be obstructed. It is dangerous to drive with limited visibility. If you are on the road and it is raining so hard you can only see a few feet in front of you, you should pull over and wait for the poor weather to pass.

Running Red Lights

Drivers run red lights if they are in a rush and don’t want to wait at the light, or if they weren’t paying attention and failed to see the red light. Either situation can cause bad accidents. Every driver needs to look at all directions before entering an intersection to prevent accidents from occurring.
