Tucson, AZ – UPDATE: Police Searching for Driver in Fatal Accident at Congress St
Tucson, AZ (December 2, 2019) – Investigators with the Tucson Police Department are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision in downtown Tucson early Saturday morning.
Officers identified the victim in that crash as 50-year-old Stanley Torinese, Jr., and said that he was hit near the intersection of Congress Street and Sixth Avenue around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday. Torinese was in the street when a pickup truck hit him and continued driving westbound on Congress.
Tucson police and members of the Tucson Fire Department attempted life-saving measures but Torinese was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are now searching for a gold or tan single-cab Chevy pickup with a chrome toolbox. Authorities believe the pickup is likely a late 1990s or early 2000s model.
Officers from the Tucson Police Department said that, of the 69 traffic fatalities they’ve handled this year, 36 have involved pedestrians.
Anyone with information about the truck and its driver or Saturday’s crash is asked to call 88-CRIME, an anonymous tipster line.
Our condolences are extended to the family of Stanley Torinese, Jr.
Hit-and-Run Crashes in Arizona
More than 30,000 car accidents causing fatalities occur in Arizona every year, according to information from the Arizona Department of Public Safety. And several of the collisions were hit-and-run incidents, where people are struck by cars or seriously injured in a wreck but abandoned at the scene. Such serious incidents are often caused by intoxicated or distracted drivers. Typically, these at-fault drivers leave the scene to avoid legal consequences.
Victims who sustain injuries in these collisions through no fault of their own may be left with high costs from medical bills and vehicle damage. And in some cases, victims may succumb to the injuries they sustained in a hit-and-run accident, leaving their families to pick up the pieces.
