Mesa, AZ – Pedestrian Struck by Car on Southern Ave Near Rural Rd

Mesa, AZ (July 20, 2019) – A pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a car on Saturday evening, July 20th.

According to Tempe police, a 45-year-old man was struck around 6:30 p.m. while crossing Southern Avenue, just west of Rural Road. The man was in a crosswalk but officials say that he was crossing against the light. First responders were on the scene and say that two cars had stopped for the man while he was crossing the road. However, a third car didn’t stop and hit the man, sending him into the car’s windshield.

The man suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

At this time, impairment is not believed to be a factor regarding the driver, though whether the pedestrian was impaired is still being investigated.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Arizona

According to a Governor’s Highway Safety Association report in 2018, Arizona had the largest rate of pedestrian fatalities in the nation. The study also showed that for the first six months of that year, Arizona had a pedestrian death rate of 1.4 fatalities per 100,000 individuals. By the end of that year, almost 200 pedestrian fatalities occurred across the state.

Pedestrian accidents often mean tragic consequences for the victims and their families, from exorbitant medical costs to long-term injuries or even death.
