Peoria, AZ – UPDATE: Miguel Espin Arrested in Car Crash at Desert Tortoise Rd

Peoria, AZ (September 7, 2020) – A woman and three children were transported to the hospital after being involved in an accident on Sunday night.

According to officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the accident involved an impaired driver. The crash happened near the intersection of Desert Tortoise Road and South Park Road on the southwest corner of Lake Pleasant.

The driver, Miguel Espin, attempted to flee the scene of the accident and was about an hour later, almost a quarter of a mile away from the original accident scene. MCSO officers say that the injured woman was in a Hummer and was flown to JCL Deer Valley hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Medical authorities said later that the woman is now paralyzed in her lower extremities.

The three children traveling with the woman in the Hummer were also taken to the hospital. Two were transported by ambulance and the third was flown to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Two passengers in the other vehicle involved, a Toyota that was apparently driven by Espin, were transported to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

MCSO determined that Espin was impaired when the accident occurred. He was arrested at the scene for aggravated assault, endangerment, leaving the scene of an injury accident, and aggravated DUI.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families. We hope for their full recovery.
