Gila Bend, AZ – Man Injured in Mine Shaft Fall at SR 238 in Gila Bend
Gila Bend, AZ (November 28, 2020) – Rescue crews from multiple agencies across Arizona safely rescued a man from a mine in the Gila Bend area on Saturday.
Per reports from Buckeye Valley fire officials and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, a 58-year-old man fell into a 50-foot mine shaft at some point before dark. Medical helicopters were used to ferry rescue crews to the site. Gila Bend, Avondale, Buckeye, Buckeye Valley, MCSO, and Phoenix fire responders all helped with the rescue.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m., officials from the MCSO said that the man had been safely pulled out of the mine. After the rescue, he was flown to the road for medical evaluation by fire personnel.
He was transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance, but EMTs said that his injuries are not life-threatening. He was said to be in stable condition but suffering from rib and shoulder pain before he was taken to the hospital.
State Route 238 between milepost 14 and 15 was closed until around 10:00 p.m. It’s unclear who owns or operates the property where the mine was located, and further details about the events leading up to the accident are unknown.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
